Field Lecture for a pair of Suku Anak Dalam’s Teenager
Saturday-Sunday, January 30-31, 2021 was the Field Lecture schedule for forestry study students at University of Muhammadiyah (UM) Jambi , a place where two youths from Suku Anak Dalam (SAD) learn and work hard to achieve their goal. In the middle of their lecture activity, they got some news from the campus particuarly for forestry study whereas Field Lecture would be held for all students level 2020, of course Seri and Juliana were surprised and immediately informed this good news to their parents. Therefore, this Field Lecture was one of the moments that had been awaited for, and they could not help to be able to make a direct contact with the campus, lecturers, students and their classmates. Before starting the preparations, they were divided into groups by the seniors who acted as the organizing committee for this activity. On January 28, 2021 they said goodbye to their families and departed from the settlement in Dwi Karya Bakti Village to the campus in Jambi city which took about 6 hours trip. Arriving in Jambi, soon they gathered and started to discuss in group related to some tools to be prepared. And Seri and Juliana were assigned to bring a wok, gallon and torch.
Finally, the D day was coming, in the morning at 06.00 o’clock they rushed to the UM Jambi campus to gather and leave by availuable car prepared by the campus. It took approximately an hour to travel from UM Jambi campus to the Field Lecture location in Alam Sebapo. Seri and Juliana enjoyed the trip as they met their friends at the same level. Arriving in location, soon the committee gave a sign to set up a tent. Seri and Juliana were separate because of the different groups. But they both seemed taking in active role in preparing the tent and all tools which brought from home. Moreover, this location seemed familiar for Seri and Juliana, because they are used to natural life and even survive in the wild. However, this condition became a special moment for both of SAD youths, although culturally they are different from others, but here in University of Muhammadiyah Jambi forestry program has made them equal.
At the beginning of the activity, they had a chance to get to know each other. When Juliana's turn to introduce herself, she looked a little bit nervous and shy as she did not get used to talk in front of the lecturers and her friends. But her friends and lecturers tried to make the atmosphere relaxe and continued supporting her so that Juliana felt confident. Juliana was finally able to get through to this difficult situation. In contrast to Seri Santoso, he was even faster in adapting and making communication each other. Seri also felt enthusiastic for this activity because it had taken such a long time for him not to meet his classmates whereas they only kept in touch through social media before. One of their seniors never thought that Seri had been quite active, it’s easy for him to adapt to new environments and reliable when doing activities on field. In fact, he seemed stand out compared to other students. Seri did not feel shy or embarrassed to come and chat with the seniors. Their closeness with other colleagues was also combined in an activity of music, playing, and making a camp fire before resting at night. Therefore, the second day was the process for providing material, followed by jungle tracking and field study practice tests while exploring the forest around the location. The last agenda of this activity was closed with an inauguration ceremony for the second level of forestry program UM Jambi and here Seri was directly appointed by the program chairman to receive a scarf symbolically representing his friends. This was a special moment for all students as well as a credit and unforgettable experience for both of SAD teenagers (Seri and Juliana). At the end of the activity, we also had the opportunity to interview Citra as the Academic Advisor who said that Seri and Juliana were two different figures, but they would be the role models for younger siblings in their settlements.
