Participatory Rural Appraisal’s Training For Area Facilitator and Partners of TFCA-Sumatra

Saving the landscape is often carried out in parallel by developing economic activities in communities outside the area. Whereas its purpose to provide diversion all at once income to the communities so that the pressure on forest area will decrease. Therefore in implementation of TFCA-S program by partners, several economic empowerment activities have been encouraged by in charge field staff when overseeing the implementation. As field staff has the capability to explore the potential, interest and mobilize the community participation to those variuos activities. PRA or Participatory Rural Appraisal, is one approach that is widely used by field staff in mapping needs, regional potentials in planning activities/programs in field. In order to provide the capacity building in mastering the PRA methodology, on 19-21 October 2021 Pundi Sumatra held a PRA training and involved 13 people from the young generation which attended as training participants. Most of the young generation were alumni of Wildlife Worrior 2019 member, partners of TFCA-S, as well as student representatives from nature lover groups of several universities in Jambi Province. The event took place at Rumah Kito Hotel & Resort, it was a basic training to introduce PRA, where Mr. Hambali, S.Sos as the main resource person who filled out the training materials. The principle of implementing Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) is actually very simple, the clue is in the word "participatory" which emphasizes the involvement of the community to participate in the development process in an area, starting from the program planning process to its implementation. The community is not only as the object that receives the program from the top (top-down), but becoming the development subject who designs development programs from the bottom (bottom-up) and is actively involved in the implementation process. In the PRA training session, participants were also invited to understand the field situation-mastering the character and condition of the assistance comunity, knowing local culture and tradition so that the solution that would be solved out becoming the right solution based on field conditions and realities. Although it is not completed by in-depth PRA practice, participants were introduced to several PRA techniques which are generally used in collecting data such as making village maps, compiling seasonal calendars, transects, Venn diagrams, historical trajectories, etc. The resource person also explained what tools and materials were usually used in facilitating PRA activities and what process stages to be implemented by the facilitator in order to make participants involve actively. In this PRA training, participants in groups are also requested to do the task namely doing social mapping to the villages in their working areas, as the initial stage of collecting data and information which will be used in the preparation of programs/activities. Participants in group work are also trained to respond to case studies, namely by asking them to discuss case material provided by resource persons, conducting case analysis and presenting the role that facilitators must play in dealing the case. In these practices, the resource persons wanted to train participants' sensitivity and foresight by positioning themselves in the midst of the assistance communities, especially in facilitating comunities to look for the best solutions to the problem they face. Therefore, the success clue of PRA activities are the group members can be involved participatively, motivated to achieve the desired results whereas all the activities implementation also took place participatively.
