Fisheries Field Schools Build Alternative Food Sources for Suku Anak Dalam

As part of efforts to increase food security and economic independence of the Suku Anak Dalam (SAD) Rombong Nurani community, Pundi Sumatra together with the Sungai Suriyan Farmers Group initiated a Fisheries Field School which will take place on 10 – 17 November 2024 in Pulau Lintang Village, Bathin VIII District, Sarolangun Regency.

The activity began with an intensive discussion with the Suriyan River Farmers Group. This discussion highlighted the various challenges and opportunities that exist in fish farming for the SAD community, as well as agreeing on strategic steps to support its success.

One of the results of this discussion was the decision to utilize two previously unused permanent pools near the SAD Rombong Nurani Multipurpose Hall. Apart from that, the community also agreed to build an additional tarpaulin-based pool, using materials that are easily found around settlements, such as bamboo and wood, as supporting walls so that the pool is stronger and able to withstand quite large water discharges.

Through support from the IPAF Program, this group purchased 1500 catfish seeds which will be cultivated starting in 2025. This Fisheries Field School activity not only aims to introduce catfish cultivation techniques, but also to instill a sense of ownership of the results of joint efforts. By involving the entire community, from parents to youth, it is hoped that this program can run sustainably and become a solution to food security for the SAD Rombong Nurani community.
